Incorporating e-file Into Your Office
Transmitting e-file returns is a fairly easy process. The FTB receives e-file returns in a variety of ways; however, FTB receives most of the returns filed by tax preparers indirectly.
Indirect transmission is when a preparer transmits returns to a software company. The company, in turn, transmits the information to FTB.
Direct transmission is when a preparer transmits returns directly to FTB rather than through a software company. Generally, if your software allows you to transmit returns directly to FTB, the software company will provide you with the Participant Acceptance Testing System (PATS) returns to submit to FTB. You must complete communication testing with FTB before you can transmit any "live" returns.
