Direct Deposit Requests

You can request a direct deposit refund on your tax return whether you e-file or file a paper return.

  • On your 2017 paper tax return, enter your banking information on the following lines:
    • Form 540 - Lines 116 and 117
    • Form 540 2EZ - Lines 33 and 34
    • Form 540NR (Long) - Lines 126 and 127
    • Form 540NR (Short) - Lines 126 and 127
  • Double-check bank routing and account numbers for accuracy to avoid deposits being rejected by your bank.
  • In e-file, follow the instructions in your software.

Adjusted Refunds

In most cases, if there is a change made to your refund, you will still receive your refund via direct deposit.

You will receive a notice, by mail, explaining why your tax return was changed.

If you requested the refund be deposited into two separate accounts, FTB will adjust the deposit using the rules described below.

Adjustments Resulting in a Larger Refund

If the adjustment results in a larger refund, FTB will add the difference into the second account.

Example: Your refund is $200, split equally between two accounts. An error increased your refund by $150, resulting in a $350 refund. FTB will adjust the direct deposit as follows:

Account Requested Amount Actual Amount
Account 1 $100 $100
Account 2 $100 $250 ($100 requested plus $150 adjustment)
Total $200 $350

Increased refund amounts to specific account types may need your attention.

  • If the refund was deposited to an account that has a contribution limit, you may need to arrange to withdraw the excess contributions.
  • If the refund was deducted as a contribution to a tax-favored account, you may need to file an amended return.

Adjustments Resulting in a Smaller Refund

If the adjustment results in a smaller refund, FTB will deduct the difference from the second account. If the difference exceeds the amount requested for the second account, FTB will deduct the remainder from the first account.

Example: Your refund is $200, split equally between two accounts. An error decreased your refund by $150, resulting in a $50 refund. FTB will adjust the direct deposit as follows:

Account Requested Amount Actual Amount
Account 1 $100 $50 ($100 requested less $50 adjustment)
Account 2 $100 $0 ($100 requested less $100 adjustment)
Total $200 $50
