I'm in the military. Do I have to use the same filing status as federal?

Español

If either you or your spouse is a member of the military and you filed your federal return using the "married filing separately" filing status, then you must use the same filing status for your California return. However, if your federal return was filed as "married filing jointly", then you may use either the "married filing jointly" or the "married filing separately" status for your California return.

For additional information see FTB Publications 1031 and 1032.
