Individual Status Letter

FTB 4148, Individual Status Letter, does the following:

  • Helps you get student loans or VA financing.
  • Shows lenders and third parties, such as employers, that you have no outstanding California Income Tax obligations.

We can provide a letter only after the original due date for the current year return.

For example, we will only provide a letter for the 2014 tax year after April 15, 2015.

How to Request a Letter

To request one for yourself

Visit a field office and provide all of the following:

  • Social Security card.
  • Valid photo ID.

If you are a parent requesting a letter for an individual under the age of 18

Visit a field office and provide all of the following:

  • Social Security card.
  • Valid photo ID.
  • Birth certificate.

If you are a parent requesting a letter for an individual over the age of 18

Visit a field office and provide all of the following:

  • Social Security card.
  • Valid photo ID.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Signed statement from the individual that authorizes the release of information on their behalf.

If you are an authorized representative requesting a letter for an individual

Visit a field office and provide all of the following:

  • Social Security card or birth certificate.
  • Valid photo ID.
  • Signed statement from the individual that authorizes the release of information on their behalf.

We accept photocopies of Social Security cards, birth certificates, and photo IDs.

If you are outside California or unable to request a letter in person, call:
