THIRD PARTY DESIGNEE CHECKBOX
PURPOSE OF BULLETIN
To inform staff that for tax years that begin on or after January 1, 2008, FTB will place a Third Party Designee Checkbox on Personal Income and Business Entity Tax Returns.
Third party designee authorization allows taxpayers to name any third party, including friends, family, and tax preparers to assist them with the resolution of return processing, payment, or refund issues.
The third party designee authorization will automatically end no later than the original due date for filing the next year’s tax return, without regard to extensions.
Example: The 2008 tax year return authorization automatically ends on April 15, 2010 (the due date of the 2009 tax return).
WHAT INFORMATION CAN BE OBTAINED
The authorization allows designees to discuss:
- Information missing from the return
- Return, refund, or payment processing
- Certain notices about math errors, offsets, or return preparation
The authorization does not allow designees to:
- Discuss any other tax year
- Receive any refund checks
- Bind you to anything (including additional tax liabilities)
Authorized designees are not able to represent taxpayers in any FTB actions.
To revoke the authorization before it ends, taxpayers can notify us by calling 800.852.5711, they can submit a written request to:
