More than 2 million can file through ReadyReturn

For Immediate Release
Sacramento – Franchise Tax Board (FTB) today announced that with only two weeks left until April 15, more than 2 million California taxpayers are eligible to file their taxes through ReadyReturn, an online tool that allows them to finish their state tax return in minutes.
“ReadyReturn provides taxpayers the simplest way to file fast and get a refund,” said State Controller and FTB Chair John Chiang. “It eliminates paperwork, and reduces this annual burden to a few mouse clicks.”
Unlike other online filing options, ReadyReturn involves no number entry. It pulls data from wage reports and past tax returns, and then generates a completed return online. The taxpayer can then review, approve, or change the return.
Taxpayers can check to see if they qualify by visiting FTB’s website at ftb.ca.gov and clicking on ReadyReturn. All that is needed is their name and social security number.
Taxpayers qualify for ReadyReturn if they:
- Filed a 2008 state resident tax return with a filing status of single or head of household.
- Had no more than five dependents, claimed no special credits other than the renter’s credit, and took the standard deduction on their 2008 return.
- Had only one employer in 2009.
However, taxpayers who married, entered into a registered domestic partnership, had a child, received additional income, or qualify for a tax credit, can easily update their ReadyReturn online.
The following lists by county the number of taxpayers currently eligible for ReadyReturn:
