Taxpayers Beware of Internet Scam

The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) has no involvement with an Internet phishing scam identified in the attached IRS news release IR-2007-109, issued May 31, 2007.
Phishing is a technique aimed at getting personal information for the purpose of identity theft. FTB takes the safety and security of taxpayer information very seriously. We never collect confidential taxpayer information through the Internet or phone solicitation.
Some people have received an email that falsely states that the recipient in under criminal investigation by the IRS for submitting a false tax return to the FTB. The IRS cautions anyone receiving such an email not to click on the link in the email or open any attachments.
