Franchise Tax Board Follows Federal Postponement Period

The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) today announced special tax relief for taxpayers in the areas hardest hit by the April 16 storm in several Northeastern states.

The FTB is giving taxpayers directly impacted by the storm an added two days beyond the April 17 deadline to file income tax returns-the same postponement period announced by the IRS.

Taxpayers needing copies of state returns to replace lost or damaged ones should complete Form FTB 3516, Request for Copy of Tax Return. Print, “April 16 Storm” in red at the top of the request. Disaster victims receive free copies of tax returns. If taxpayers are e-filing, they should follow the software instructions to enter the disaster information.

For more information, refer to IRS Notice 2007-89. To learn more about state disaster losses, refer to publication FTB 1034, Disaster Loss at www.ftb.ca.gov or the IRS 547, Casualties, Disasters, and Thefts at www.irs.gov.

If you can't pay your taxes, request a payment plan online. If you owe less than $25,000 and can repay it within five years, you will generally qualify.
