Sacramento – Following Tuesday's news from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) is giving state taxpayers until the end of the day on Wednesday, April 18 to file state income tax returns and pay any amounts due.

"Any California taxpayers affected by problems at the IRS will have extra time to file and complete their state return," State Controller and FTB Chair Betty T. Yee said.

Early Tuesday morning, the IRS experienced a number of system issues that prevented some taxpayers from completing their federal returns. California taxpayers generally need to complete their federal return before their state return can be filed.

California taxpayers do not need to take any action to qualify for the extended due date. The state already provides an automatic six-month extension to October 15 for taxpayers who need additional time to file state returns. Any state income tax due must still be paid by April 18.

FTB administers two of California's major tax programs: Personal Income Tax and the Corporation Tax. FTB also administers other non tax programs and delinquent debt collection functions, including delinquent vehicle registration debt collections on behalf of the Department of Motor Vehicles, and court–ordered debt. Annually, FTB’s tax programs collect more than 70 percent of the state’s general fund. For more information on other taxes and fees in California, visit taxes.ca.gov.
