"Ghost Tax Preparers" Continue to Victimize Taxpayers
Public Affairs Office
For Immediate Release
Sacramento – The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) is partnering with the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) to warn taxpayers of a common scam called “ghost” preparers, where a preparer submits tax returns without the preparer’s legally-required signature.
Any tax preparer who charges for return preparation is required to sign the taxpayer’s return, which helps ensure their accountability to accurately prepare the return and protect the taxpayer.
Please read CTEC’s news release here for additional information and how to protect yourself from this scam.
FTB administers two of California's major tax programs: Personal Income Tax and the Corporation Tax. FTB also administers other non tax programs and delinquent debt collection functions, including delinquent vehicle registration debt collections on behalf of the Department of Motor Vehicles, and court–ordered debt. Annually, FTB’s tax programs collect more than 70 percent of the state’s general fund. For more information on other taxes and fees in California, visit taxes.ca.gov.
