Sacramento — The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) today corrected the number of filers receiving the cash-back California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), as well as the amount of money issued so far this tax season.
As of March 11, 2017, the total number of taxpayers receiving CalEITC was 188,586, a 5 percent decrease from the same time last year. As of March 12, 2016, 197,561 taxpayers had received the credit.
As of March 11, 2017, the total amount of CalEITC issued was $111,540,481, a 4 percent decrease from the same time last year. As of March 12, 2016, $115,998,646 in CalEITC money was issued.
See corrected CalEITC data broken down by county here.
The corrected CalEITC numbers are in line with this season's trend for all tax return filing, which has dropped by approximately 6.4 percent from last year. As of March 10, 2017, FTB received 6,894,326 current-year returns so far this tax season. As of March 11, 2016, FTB received 7,366,453 current-year returns.
The updated CalEITC numbers replace those announced in our March 3 press release. After validating the data for subsequent returns in March, we found the March 3 report included an error that over-reported the number of CalEITC recipients and the amount of CalEITC money issued.
FTB apologizes for any inconvenience the earlier error may have caused.
