Sacramento –The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) announced taxpayers can save time and money using its new online self-service application for obtaining entity status letters.

An entity status letter discloses whether or not a business entity is in good standing with FTB and provides certification to use for:

  • Legal status in court proceedings.
  • An outstanding liability that could have an effect on an entity's credit rating , for example, the closing of escrow.
  • Verification of an exempt status.
  • Registering a corporation or LLC to transact business in another state.

Previously, entity status letters cost $20 and were available by visiting field office locations or mailing a written request to FTB.

Taxpayers can obtain their own entity status letters for free by visiting our public website ftb.ca.gov, selecting the Businesses tab, and then the Entity Status Letter application.

Customers will need either the entity name or number to search our records and create the letter.

The entity status letter contains public information and does not reflect the entity's status with any other agency.

Any interested party can request an entity status letter for the following types of entities:

  • Corporations
  • Exempt organizations
  • Banks
  • Financial institutions
  • Limited liability companies (taxed as corporations, partnerships, or disregarded entities)
