Statement of Tax Due notices with no Return Information Notices issued
PURPOSE OF BULLETIN
To inform staff that 3,477 Personal Income Tax Statement of Tax Due (STD) notices were mailed with no explanation of the revision to the return, which created the balance due; and no Return Information Notice (RIN) was issued to the taxpayer.
On Saturday, May 3, 2008, approximately 85,600 RINs and 233,400 STDs were printed with a mail date of May 8. During the review process, a math error was discovered; some STDs were issued before a RIN was issued to the taxpayer.
The following issues were identified:
- Approximately 3,477 STDs were issued where a RIN had not been previously issued or mailed to the taxpayer. The information contained in the STD is correct and penalties and interest were not included; however, the STD did not contain an explanation regarding the change to the balance due.
- Approximately 526 STDs, which included penalties and interest, were issued where a RIN had not previously been issued or mailed to the taxpayer. Therefore, the taxpayer was not afforded an opportunity to pay the tax liability due prior to the penalties and interest being applied.
A letter will be sent to affected taxpayers by Monday, May 12, 2008. The letter will provide a special phone number 800.262.0512, to call for an explanation of the adjustments that were made to their account.
