Decommissioning Western UnionPublic Service Bulletin

Purpose of bulletin

June 6, 2018

To inform staff that June 15, 2018 will be the last day Receiving and Data Storage will accept any Western Union (WU) payments.

Background

The Western Union check printer process is outdated and causes numerous problems for the department and taxpayers. The manual printing and reconciliation process led FTB to decommission the WU payment process. The first Early Warning about this issue was published on March 7, 2018.

The public website and IVR will be updated to remove WU as a payment option. Any business area with procedures that reference WU must be updated since this will no longer be an option after June 15, 2018.

An Invitation for Bid (IFB) for an electronic wire service for cash payments went out for bid on May 18, 2018. This will allow debtors using cash to use a wire service to submit funds to FTB.

Taxpayer inquiries

If a taxpayer or their representative contacts FTB to make a payment, provide them with other payment options. Go to ftb.ca.gov to search for Payment Options.
