State Tax Information Available Online
Released: May 20, 2009
Sacramento – The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) announced today that state tax refund information can be found by visiting FTB’s website, ftb.ca.gov.
“Taxpayers can quickly confirm their return was received, find the status of their refund, and then connect with other free online services,” said State Controller and FTB Chair John Chiang.
The “Refund Status” will tell taxpayers when their return was received, when their refund was authorized, or if their refund was used to pay amounts owed to other state or local agencies. This feature is also available in Spanish at “Revisar el estado de su reembolso.”
To check a refund status, taxpayers need to have the following information ready:
- Social security number.
- Complete mailing address.
- The refund amounts shown on the tax return.
Taxpayers who e-filed their tax returns and requested their refunds to be directly deposited into their bank accounts generally receive their refunds within one week. FTB received nearly 4.2 million tax returns during the final weeks of the tax season, and may need up to eight weeks to process paper returns filed during that time period.
For taxpayers who recently moved and did not choose direct deposit, their refund check may have been returned to FTB. The U.S. Post Office does not forward tax refund checks. FTB will reissue refunds once a new address is received. Taxpayers needing to change their address can go to ftb.ca.gov and download Form FTB 3533, Change of Address, or call 800.852.5711 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
To date, more than $9.1 billion in tax refunds have been issued. The average personal income tax refund is $921, up from last year’s average of $836. The 13.9 million personal income tax returns filed this year is less than the 14.4 million filed this time last year.
For taxpayers filing by the October 15 extended due date, FTB offers free e-filing through their CalFile and ReadyReturn programs. More than 176,000 returns created by the ReadyReturn program are still waiting for taxpayers.
