October 15 Deadline Approaches for State Income Tax Extension Filings

Sacramento - The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) today reminded taxpayers that Monday, October 15 is the deadline to file their 2006 state income tax returns for those who opted to file past the traditional April 15 tax deadline. Each year nearly 1million taxpayers file their California income tax returns on extension. Those who file late may face penalties.

“October the 15th is an important deadline for nearly 1 million Californians,” said State Controller and FTB Chair John Chiang. “Plenty of time remains and I encourage them to take advantage of FTB services like e-file and e-pay that make filing a tax return easier.”

E-filing offers quick refunds, increased accuracy, and timely confirmation that the FTB received your return. FTB offers free online e-file for many taxpayers through its CalFile program available at the FTB’s Website at ftb.ca.gov. Taxpayers can also e-file using their tax preparer or commercial online software provider.

FTB encourages taxpayers to use electronic payment options. The FTB’s Web Pay is a secure online service that provides the convenience of online bill payment. Taxpayers can pay the current amount owed; plus, schedule future payments, such as estimated tax payments, for up to one year in advance. Taxpayers can also pay using their Discover/NOVUS, MasterCard, American Express, or Visa credit cards. To pay by credit card, taxpayers can call (800) 2PAY TAX [(800) 272-9829] or visit www.officialpayments.com. The vendor charges a convenience fee.

Starting in December, FTB will compare its database of returns filed with its database of income records to begin contacting nonfilers. FTB annually contacts about 800,000 individuals who fail to file tax returns and collects another $500 million from this group.

As of October 8, California taxpayers filed 14.6 million personal income tax returns of which 9.3 million were e-filed.
