FTB Follows Federal Postponement Dates for Victims of Hawaii Earthquake

Taxpayers who live in the federally declared disaster areas affected by the recent Hawaiian earthquake are granted special tax relief, according to the Franchise Tax Board.

The President has declared a major disaster for Hawaii. The FTB will extend the deadline for affected taxpayers to file returns, pay taxes and perform other time-sensitive acts falling on or after October 15, 2006, and on or before October 23, 2006, have been postponed to October 23, 2006.

"The victims of this terrible earthquake will need all the help that is available to them," said State Controller and FTB Chair Steve Westly. "By extending the deadline for meeting state and federal tax obligations, victims can focus on more urgent needs, such as rebuilding their homes, communities, and lives."

The IRS and FTB are granting the limited relief because the earthquake occurred at a crucial filing deadline when individual income tax returns on extension are due. The relief applies to the counties of Hawaii, Honolulu, Kauai and Maui.

“Taxpayers should understand that the extra time to file and pay comes without penalties or interest. Any one experiencing an ongoing hardship should truly take advantage of the extra time,” said Board of Equalization Chair and FTB Member John Chiang.

Taxpayers needing copies of lost or damaged state returns should complete Form FTB 3516, Request for Copy of Tax Return. Disaster victims receive copies of tax returns for free. Print “Hawaii Earthquake” in red at the top of the request.
