Didn't File Taxes Last Year - Check Your Mail

More than 350,000 notices are being mailed to Californians who failed to file their 2001 state income tax returns, according to the Franchise Tax Board (FTB).

“Most Californians file their tax returns and pay on time,” stated State Controller and FTB Chair Steve Westly. “I strongly urge those who didn't file to comply with the notice. Making the tax system fair entails that we all participate in supporting our state government.”

Each year, Californians file more than 14 million tax returns. Those who earned California income, but did not file, will get a notice asking about their return. Each year, the FTB receives more than 160 million income records from third parties such as banks, employers, the Internal Revenue Service, and other sources. The FTB matches these income records against the records of tax returns filed.

This year, some notices will also include a completed tax return. The FTB prepared the return based upon the income information received. If the individual agrees with the figures shown on the return, the person simply signs the return and sends it back for processing. If the individual disagrees with the accuracy of the prepared return, the notice directs the person to complete a new tax return and mail it to the FTB.

The FTB has a Website for those who receive notices, ftb.ca.gov/inc, where they can download tax forms, find answers to frequently asked questions, request more time to respond, and reply to the notice. The FTB's main Website, www.ftb.ca.gov, allows individuals to e-file their returns, view their account status, or pay their taxes electronically. For those who cannot pay their taxes in full, individuals can also request an installment agreement online.

Each year the FTB sends more than 550,000 notices to nonfilers. Individuals can also call (800) 852-5711, if they need to speak to a customer service representative.
