A CSN is a 4-digit authentication number the Franchise Tax Board issues each taxpayer every year. The combination of the CSN and the taxpayer's Social Security Number ensures confidentiality and security when accessing personal tax information online.
Taxpayers who want to access personal tax information online need a CSN. With your CSN you can:
If you filed a 2006 California individual income tax return, you can look it up online.
If you did not file a 2006 California individual income tax return, you must call our Taxpayer Services Center to get your CSN or have a CSN assigned. Before you call, please have your valid California driver's license or California identification card available. Call toll-free in the United States: (800) 353-9032. From outside the United States, call (916) 845-6600.

5. What happens if I use the wrong CSN?
You will not be able to access personal tax information on our Website if you use a wrong CSN. You must use the CSN that we issued to you.
6. Can I use the same CSN next year?
No. We issue each taxpayer a new CSN every year. The CSN you use in 2008 will not be valid in 2009.
