California courts impose fines, fees, penalties, forfeitures and restitution orders as well as most Vehicle Code violations. Since each court manages its accounts receivable differently, it is not possible to estimate the total amount of delinquent court-ordered debt owed in California. We do know the amount is significant.
We collect debts for courts that volunteer for our Court-Ordered Debt Collections program.
We are authorized to collect court-ordered debt under Section 19280 of the California Revenue and Taxation Code.
The participating courts fund Court-Ordered Debt Collections. Our administrative costs cannot exceed 15 percent of the amount we collect (Revenue and Taxation Code Section 19280).
Due to the program's continued success, the legislature made the Court-Ordered Debt Collections program permanent and expanded it to accept cases from all 58 counties (Revenue and taxation code Section 19282).
Please note: We only collect the debt on behalf of the court that imposed it. We are not responsible for imposing the debt. If you have specific questions about the details of the case, you must contact the court that imposed the debt.
