A former Catholic priest pleaded guilty today to one count of grand theft, and one count of tax fraud, according to the Franchise Tax Board.
Patrick O'Shea, 69, was sentenced to four years in state prison and ordered to pay restitution of $187,000 to the Archdiocese of San Francisco, and tax, penalties, interest, and cost of the investigation to the FTB.
According to court documents O'Shea stole $187,000 from the Archdiocese over the course of several years in the early to mid 1990s. He failed to claim this income on his 1993 state income tax return. O'Shea will also owe FTB the unpaid taxes, penalties, interest, and cost of investigation on this amount. All income is taxable including income from illegal activities.
Superior Court Judge Ksenia Tsenin handed down the sentence in Department 26 of the San Francisco Superior Court. San Francisco County Assistant District Attorney David Pfeifer prosecuted the case.
This was a joint investigation between the San Francisco County District Attorney's Office and the Franchise Tax Board.
