State Controller and FTB Chair, John Chiang, processing jobs in FTB’s pipeline
John Chiang, State Controller and Chair of the Franchise Tax Board (FTB), familiarized himself with two FTB pipeline-processing jobs. The first two video clips show Controller Chiang sorting tax returns at a "Tingle" table, named after the inventor Ira Tingle. The third video clip features Controller Chiang using a "Bates Machine." This specialized stamping device is used to identify returns with a unique document locater number. Just 14 years ago, we ran 100 percent of all returns through these manual processes. Last year, 63 percent of all personal income tax returns were e-filed.
