Incorporating Individual e-file Into Your Office

Client log

You probably already have some type of tracking mechanism for knowing which clients you have received information from and which returns are complete. With e-file, a Client Log can be a helpful tool to track the progress of each return. Most preparers say their client log contains the following information:

  • The date of the client's visit or the date the client's information was received.
  • When the California e-file Return Authorization (form FTB 8453) or the California e-file Signature Authorization (form FTB 8879) was signed.
  • When the return was transmitted.
  • Date the return was accepted or rejected.
  • Date of correction or re-transmission.

Example of a client log:  After preparing      After signing     After transmitting      When completed

Review your software information for additional suggestions for creating client logs.  Many companies offer client databases and client tracking mechanisms.

Tip: You can always check on the status of an e-file return with FTB's e-service, Check e-file Return Status*.
